Motivational Interviewing on Steroids!
How would you like to maintain focus on your long-term goals, rather than get hi-jacked by short-term distractions that ultimately leave you feeling bad about yourself?
Functional Imagery Training (FIT) is a novel approach to behaviour change that uses sensory-rich mental imagery to motivate change. FIT has been developed by researchers at the University of Plymouth and Queensland University of Technology, and is based on a psychological theory called Elaborated Intrusion theory, which explains the key role of mental imagery in desire.
Because mental imagery is more strongly emotionally charged than verbal thought, it is very potent; it is mental imagery that gives drug and food cravings their power to sabotage our longer-term goals. But what if we could harness this power to increase motivation towards attaining the life goals that really matter to us?
Enter FIT.
Through tailored imagery exercises, delivered within a person-centred Motivational Interviewing framework, FIT strengthens motivation and builds desire for the behaviours which will help you to overcome obstacles and move you towards your desired goals. FIT teaches you how to elicit and practise motivational imagery yourself, so that it becomes habitual, resulting in sustained behaviour change in whatever area of life you choose.
FIT can be applied to a wide range of life goals, including healthy eating, weight loss and performance goals, and emotional regulation.
