When self-doubt gets in the way of what you’re capable of
You may know that you have the ability to succeed, yet find that confidence disappears when it matters most. Perhaps you hesitate, overprepare, avoid opportunities or become so concerned about getting things wrong that it becomes difficult to perform at your best.
Confidence and performance coaching can help you understand what is getting in the way, respond differently to pressure and approach important situations with greater flexibility and self-belief.
I offer confidence coaching in Weston-super-Mare and online throughout the UK.
Confidence is not something you either have or lack
Confidence can change according to the situation. You may feel assured in one part of your life but uncertain in another, or discover that an experience which once felt manageable has become increasingly difficult.
You might be:
- questioning your your abilities despite evidence of your competence;
- holding back from opportunities or greater visibility;
- struggling with presentations, interviews or difficult conversations;
- affected by criticism, rejection or a professional setback;
- comparing yourself unfavourably with other people;
- caught in perfectionism, overpreparation or procrastination;
- worried about being exposed as not good enough;
- finding that pressure interferes with your concentration or performance;
- returning to work or taking on a new role;
- losing confidence following burnout, redundancy or a period away from work.
These responses may reflect patterns of thinking and responding that developed for understandable reasons but are no longer helping you achieve what matters.
Understanding what is maintaining the difficulty
Simply telling yourself to be more confident rarely creates lasting change. Confidence is influenced by how you interpret situations, what you predict will happen, where you direct your attention and how you respond to uncertainty or discomfort.
Avoidance can bring immediate relief, but ultimately reinforces the belief that a situation is unsafe or beyond your abilities. Perfectionism can create impressive results while also increasing pressure, delaying action and making every mistake feel significant. Excessive self-monitoring can draw attention away from the task itself and interfere with your natural capabilities.
Through coaching, we can develop a shared understanding of the thoughts, emotions, behaviours and circumstances maintaining your particular difficulty. This gives us a more useful starting point than assuming you simply need greater willpower or positive thinking.
How confidence and performance coaching can help
Your coaching will be shaped around your goals and circumstances. Depending on your needs, our work may include:
- recognising patterns that undermine confidence;
- identifying assumptions and predictions that deserve to be questioned;
- developing a more balanced view of your abilities;
- reconnecting with strengths, values and previous successes;
- reducing perfectionistic or all-or-nothing thinking;
- learning ways to manage pressure and emotional activation;
- directing attention more effectively during demanding situations;
- using imagery to strengthen motivation and prepare for action;
- approaching avoided situations gradually and purposefully;
- planning behavioural experiments to test new ways of responding;
- reviewing what happens and adjusting the approach as you progress.
My role is to guide this process, introduce relevant psychological ideas and provide thoughtful challenge. You remain in control of your goals, decisions and the pace at which we work.
When a difficult experience has affected your confidence
Sometimes confidence changes after a particular experience: a presentation that went badly, a critical manager, rejection, redundancy, conflict, public embarrassment or another event that continues to influence how you approach similar situations.
Sometimes confidence changes after a particular experience: a presentation that went badly, a critical manager, rejection, redundancy, conflict, public embarrassment or another event that continues to influence how you approach similar situations.
Through coaching, we can explore what the experience came to mean to you, how it may be shaping your expectations now and what could help you respond differently. Greater understanding can create more choice, allowing you to approach future situations with increased flexibility and confidence.
Performance without relentless pressure
Performance coaching is not simply about working harder or becoming more productive. Sustainable performance depends on using your attention and energy effectively, responding flexibly to challenges and pursuing goals without allowing achievement to consume everything else.
Coaching can support performance in many areas, including:
- work and leadership;
- interviews and career progression;
- public speaking and presentations;
- study and professional development;
- creative work;
- sport and physical activity;
- personal projects and significant life goals.
The aim is not to eliminate every doubt or uncomfortable feeling. It is to help you act effectively without needing complete certainty or perfect confidence first.
What might change?
As a result of coaching, you may develop:
- a clearer understanding of what affects your confidence;
- a more balanced and compassionate inner dialogue;
- greater confidence in your existing strengths and capabilities;
- more effective responses to pressure and setbacks;
- greater willingness to take appropriate risks;
- less reliance on avoidance or overpreparation;
- improved focus in challenging situations;
- a practical plan for continuing to build confidence through experience.
Progress will look different for everyone. We will agree what meaningful change would look like for you and review it throughout our work.
